Obituary For Sonny Hopkins

No one prepares you for the first time an animal chooses you.

My Sonny came into my life in the most special way—one I’ll always hold onto. Sonny was a juvenile, less than six months old, when he chose me to be his person.

One morning, while I was cleaning the cages as usual at my former job at Petco, this brave little guy flew over and landed on my arm as all of the older birds stayed on the other side of the cage. He looked up at me, chirped, and even landed on my head. From that day on I had a feeling. I looked for him every time I came in. He would get so excited to see me.

Every day for a week, I’d search for him, telling myself that if no one chose him, I’d be taking him home.

He became my very first bird—and one of the greatest gifts life has ever given me.

I was blessed with five wonderful and unforgettable years with Sonny. Throughout our time together, he taught me many things, but perhaps the greatest lesson of all was to slow down and appreciate life’s simplest pleasures—something so many of us take for granted.

Sonny unexpectedly passed away in the early hours of July 26, 2026. With him, he took a piece of my heart that will never be filled quite the same.

There is no greater love than that of such an emotionally intelligent little animal. The house is unusually quiet without you. I will forever cherish the love and patience you had for me as I learned how to care for you and be the best mom I could be.

I’ll miss your singing, your chirping, and the countless hours we spent sitting together watching TV. My love, you are finally free from any worry or pain.

Thank you for making me the happiest momma. Rest easy, sweet one, because this isn’t goodbye.

I’ll see you later, my Sonny boy! ❤
